CORPUS ALCHEMICUM ARABICUM *Hardcover

This book is available NOW to order.
Corpus Alchemicum Arabicum is a key manuscript on symbolic Arabic Alchemy. In this work, the Arabic text is always accompanied by a parallel English translation. This is a complete work within itself; Volume I of CALA presents the first edition of Hall ar-Rumuz (Explanation of the Symbols). It was written by Muhammad Ibn Umail (10th century), one of the most important representatives of the symbolic branch of alchemy. In later Latin alchemy he is known under the name, Senior. Ibn Umail's description of the alchemical work is a symbolic rendering of his experience of an inner-psychic process of transformation that he considered as being the highest goal in human life. Due to his extremely introverted lifestyle and his devoted focus toward the inner world, Ibn Umail was able to observe and describe this mysterious process with the "substantial symbols", emerging out of the depth of his psyche. His symbolic attitude facilitates a kind of inter-confessionalism: he states in Hall ar-Rumuz that "the result of the alchemical work can be produced by a person from any religion". The psychic transformation achieved by the work leads to the stone, a symbol for the solidified divine kernel of an individual. This center also has a collective dimension. Thus Ibn Umail also names the stone "mosque" or "temple". His work connects and bridges the Ancient Egyptian quest for immortality directly with later Latin alchemy and the modern depth psychology of C.G. Jung with its aim of creating spiritual gold: consciousness. Ibn Umail's work thus constitutes an important cultural link in the history of the spiritual aspect of alchemy.
Muhammad Ibn Umail

From the editor: The origin of this edition goes back to the time before the Second World War, when C.G. Jung asked Marie-Louise von Franz to translate and edit the Aurora Consurgens, an alchemical text attributed to Thomas Aquinas. This book appeared in 1957 as volume III of C.G. Jung's Mysterium Coniunctionis. In this text, Muhammad Ibn Umail - in Latin called Senior - is the most frequently quoted authority. These quotations come from a text of Senior that circulated under the short title Tabula chemica (Chemical tablet). In the course of her work on the Aurora consurgens M.-L. von Franz came across the Arabic original of this text, the Kitab al-Md al-waraqi wa-l-and an-nagmaya (Book of the silvery water and starry earth). This book is an extensive commentary of Ibn Umail on his own alchemical poem Risalat as-gams ild l-hilal (Epistle of the sun to the crescent moon). The text was edited by M. Turab `All, H.E. Stapleton and M. Hidayat and published in Calcutta in 1933. The Arabic text was not translated into English. Only the incomplete Latin translation was published along with the Arabic text. The Kitab al-Ma' al-waraqi is, to our knowledge, the only book by Ibn Umail that has partly been translated into Latin. It is considered to be one of the most explicit sources for the spiritual dimension of Arabic alchemy as can be seen from the quotations in the Aurora Consurgens...

...The Book of the Explanation of the Symbols - written by Muhammad ibnZ Umail' at-Tamimi', may God have mercy upon him. In the name of the merciful and compassionate God. My success comes only from God, on Him I depend and to Him I turn repentantly". Muhammad ibn Umail said: Know, oh pious brother, that the sages have a language that they agreed upon and adopted to speak in, a language in symbols. They did this because they directed the words which they set down in their books only to those who know their language, share their moral values and are guided by their words and deeds, following their advice and spiritual counsels. Thus, whoever seeks their knowledge and their works from the sources which they mentioned and whoever, according to their stipulated rules, continues with his quest and is sincere about it, will pursue the reading and examining of these books and will contemplate and ponder over them. That is because they have methods and analogies for the concealed meanings that are different from the apparent words. Therefore, the contradictions of what they described outwardly should not be taken into consideration, as what they agreed upon is not contradictory in regard to the concealed meanings. I asked the exalted God for proper guidance...
