SANTERIA SHRINE

Portable shrines are rarely abandoned as this one was. The event that caused the Santero's hasty evacuation is not recorded in any government or church ledger, but the coalmine town of Carthage, New Mexico's connection to the Carthage of antiquity in Tunisia, North Africa are not without similarities... they were both laid to waste...

From Dr. Oliver I. Spence, W.D.: Within a rusted tin building, littered with glass and parchment, a makeshift Crucifix just barley held onto a railroad spike about 15 feet up. Below the iron and wire Crucifix was the handmade candle and offering shrine that you see here.

The ghost town; Carthage of Socorro County, New Mexico has since been destroyed in the name of desert restoration and because the safety of travelers could no longer be secured; those were the official reasons. Large piles of wormed wood and weathered tin at a nearby dump testify that Carthage had been much more than an abandoned railroad coal town.

This New Mexico coal-mining town was not the first to be named Carthage. The first is in Tunisia, North Africa. We have few sources of everyday life of the early Carthaginians. Their religion had Baal and Tanit as central gods. The religion of the Carthaginians involved rituals with human sacrifice... including the custom of child sacrifice for the god Baal.

In 1964, a UFO controversy gripped the tiny neighborhood around Carthage, and it continues to this day.

This Santeria or VooDoo candle shrine may be the only occult artifact that came out of Carthage New Mexico intact. Perhaps Carthage, New Mexico is a an active vortex and the Santero was attempting to quiet its restless spirits...
